Wilderness Discipleship Camp High School Juniors & Seniors

Wilderness Discipleship Camp is for individual high school juniors and seniors who are serious about growing in Christ and want to experience life change through wilderness adventure. Wilderness Discipleship takes all the fun of Summer Camp into the wilderness for a 2-week or 8-day epic adventure. A perfect training ground for Christian leadership or camp staff.

Christ-like change through wilderness adventures and intentional discipleship is the goal of the wilderness program. Faith is strengthened through experiences that teach living out faith at home, school, church or—maybe one day—as a Camp Eagle staff member. Experience the power of God's creation, build life-changing friendships, and dig into God's Word. Bring an adventurous spirit and be ready for fun this summer at Eagle Quest.

Discipleship is a familiar Christian word. The word is used interchangeably with “Bible study,” but it is not an activity that we do to grow or be a better Christian—it is the very core of one who follows Christ. Discipleship is the act of growing more like Christ through simple obedience. It should mean everything to believers because through discipleship the world is left behind, but Christ is gained.

Discipleship at Camp Eagle is not a pen-and-paper program, yet through experiences, foundational tools necessary for growing in Christ will be explored. Discover, as Jesus’ disciples did, that following Jesus is accomplished through acts of simple obedience. The nature of this program is to amplify and simplify the call to discipleship so living for Christ becomes the greatest desire.

Wilderness Discipleship Camp is a backpacking program for Campers that aims for deeper discipleship and adventure. Two unique experiences for the first and second year of Wilderness Discipleship Camp are offered.

First Year: Juniors and Seniors

An eight-day wilderness backpacking adventure incorporating in-depth Bible study along with outdoor adventure campers wrestle not only with the elements, but with what they believe and why. This experience will be full of contrast. Balance intense growth with care-free fun. Just as physical and mental limits are reached, peace and relaxation are just around the corner. Wilderness discipleship is a program for everyone; no backpacking experience or gear is necessary. All that is required is a desire to learn and enjoy the outdoors.

  • Entering junior or senior year of high school.

Second Year: Seniors Only

This two-week adventure is the pinnacle Camp Eagle experience. It is designed for campers who are looking to grow and willing to step out in faith to find growth. The experience will kick off with a backpacking trip for group bonding intertwined with wilderness challenges that stretch the limits physically, mentally and spiritually. Venture outside Camp Eagle and paddle down one of the most pristine rivers in the country, the Pecos, while learning to live in a tightly-knit Christian community, and building life-long authentic friendships.

  • Entering junior or senior year of high school.
  • Complete the first year of Wilderness Discipleship Camp

Backpacking and hiking in Texas may not be well known, but Competitor magazine declared Camp Eagle as "Texas' best adventure destination." With 1400 acres of rugged Hill Country along with natural caves, a quarter mile of 150' tall limestone cliff, and 1.5 miles of the crystal clear Nueces River, Camp Eagle has more natural resources jammed into one space than most camps across the nation.

Wilderness operates out of "Base Camp" where gear, provisions and showers are found. At Wilderness, sleeping under the stars is standard practice, but tents and hammocks aren’t the only places to catch shut-eye. Screened bungalows and 10-bunk log cabins are lodging while not on trail. Refresh from the dusty trail at the bathhouse and chow down a home-style meal at Mi Casa, the central hangout for Wilderness participants.

Camp Eagle hires college students from all over the country to lead camp each summer. The application process consists of a detailed questionnaire, multiple references, interviews, and background checks. In searching for the staff God would have lead your students, ceratin qualifications are sought. A passion for Christ and alignment with the Camp Eagle mission for Christ-like change are top priority. The staff hired enjoy students, the outdoors and want to see God change lives through summer camp experiences.

Will Wilderness Discipleship Camp be too intense if I have never been backpacking before?
Wilderness Discipleship Camp is a customized program. It is great for those who have never backpacked before but would like the experience. It is also great for seasoned backpackers because it offers new challenges, like the cliff, caves, and river not found through other backpacking experiences.
